Westwego Ice And Coal Company & Westwego Ice Company, Inc.

Old building of the Westwego Ice Company, Inc.

This is the original building constructed on this site at 260/272 Sala Avenue, in 1907 by Louis Paysee to house the Louisiana Ice and Coal Company. The company produced ice in the summer and sold coal in the winter.

In order to have a water supply to operate the ice plant, he had to run a pipe from the Mississippi River to the plant. The availability of ice was a turning point for the fishing and shrimping industries.

On May 14, 1913, he sold the business, and in 1919, the name was changed to the Westwego Ice Company, Inc. In 1941, the Westwego Ice Company, Inc. was purchased by Ed Martin. The company closed its business in 1971.
