Arnondin Building

Loop Hotel-loop Cleaners Merlin's Department Store

This building located at 446 Sala Avenue, was built by the Arnondin Family in the late 1920s. It was used as a bar, dance hall, and for occasional gambling. On the second floor was the Loop Hotel, the only hotel in town.

In 1929, Julius Sandras and Webster Terrebonne opened the first laundry and dry-cleaning business in Westwego on the bottom floor in the rear of the building. It was named ''Loop
Cleaners'' after the hotel. Loop cleaners moved to Avenue ''A"when Julius Sandras became the sole owner in 1931.

The hotel closed in the mid-1930s.

All other business ventures failed and the building was sold in the late 1940s to the Merlin Family who opened a ladies' dress shop with accessories. It was a thriving business until the late 1970s. All other businesses ~eased in 1992 on the first floor. However, the upstairs was still rented as apartments.
