The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announces improvements to traffic signal timings along the Westbank Expressway.
Recently, new loop detectors were installed at intersections along the Expressway. The detectors sense when vehicles approach the traffic signal from the side streets and median. The side street and median signals no longer have a set amount of green light time. Motorists on the side street and median approaches should pay close attention to the signal indications as the time will vary depending on demand. The unused green time from the side streets and median will be given to mainline approaches.
In addition, flashing yellow arrow traffic signals were installed along the Westbank Expressway and across the New Orleans Metropolitan area.
Flashing yellow arrow traffic signals feature the flashing yellow arrow, in addition to the traditional red, yellow and green arrows.
When illuminated, the flashing yellow arrow allows waiting motorists to make a left-hand turn after yielding to oncoming traffic. Oncoming traffic has a green light, so drivers must wait for a safe gap in the oncoming traffic before turning.
Flashing yellow arrow signals keep motorists safer during heavy traffic and reduce delays when traffic is light. The new traffic signals also provide traffic engineers with more options to handle a variety of traffic volumes.
Motorists will eventually encounter the new flashing yellow arrow traffic signals on all state roadways across Louisiana at locations where a protected left turn already exists, as part of a federal standard for implementation of the signals.
